Mildred is 11 years old when her life is unexpectedly disrupted by the arrival of her estranged father, Strawn Wise. Strawn, who was once a successful magician, has long since fallen from grace and has had little contact with Mildred throughout her life. Their relationship is strained and unfamiliar, with Mildred feeling unsure of who this man really is.
